"VERY BAD CASE."
ASSAULT ON A YOUTH.
TWO YOUNG MEN SENTENCED. PRISON FOR ONE OFFENDER. " The case is a very bad one and the charges might have been more serious," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when Victor Harold Traue, aged 20 (Mr. Singer), and Leslie John Walding, aged 21, both labourers, appeared for sentence on charges of assaulting George Albeit Oourlav McClatchie. and stealing from him an overcoat valued at £7. Referring to Walding, the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said he had "more convictions than he had birthdays." " His 'list' is something dreadful," said Mr. Hunt, when accused's record of previous convictions was handed to him. " He is only a young man and yet he aheady has 22 previous convictions for offences, including assault and demanding money with menaces." On the charge of theft Walding was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, to he followed by two years' refoi nyil ive detention. He was convicted and discharged on the other charge. When Traue's case was dealt with, Mr. Singer said he had already been in prison a few days and he had had time to repent. lie had no previous convictions. IT to Rev. G. E. Morcton, assistant,Anglican City Missioner, said Traue's trouble was drink. lie had recently got into bad company. He advised a term of probation as accused could he placed in a position. The magistrate said he understood tin* probation officer also recommended a similar course. Accused would be placed on probation for two years.
