INCOME TAX NOT PAID.
FAILURE TO SEND RETURNS. FINES OF £Bl IMPOSED. [by TKLKonAvir. —own ronßKfirovnK.vr.] \VKLLIX(.TOX. Friday. Fines totalling more than ;CBO were imposed by Mr. E Pago, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day on L rederick James Staniforth, who through his counsel, Mr. T. Jordan, pleaded guilty to four charges of failing to furnish income tax returns. Tho assistant Crown solicitor, Mr. J. Tudehopc, said the defendant was the proprietor of a motor service between M.isterton arid Wellington, and he had not, furnished any returns all tho time ho had been in business. Last month the department had obtained an inkling of his business, and its success, and an inspector was sent to Mastcrton to investigate. Staniforth's affairs. Tie found that, over the last, six years, after making all allowances, the defendant had made a net income of £7690. The income tax on this was £433, which would havo been a loss lo tho Slate had not the department discovered the defendant's existence. "1 submit," concluded Mr. Tudehopc, "that Iho taxpayer who fails to furnish his returns, and keeps the department in the dark, is in the same position as tho man who deliberately furnishes false rctunis."
Mr. Jordan said the whole trouble appeared to be, that Staniforth was trying to do too much with one pair of hands, lie was a particularly busy man. "I shall have to impose a substantial penalty in this case," said Mr. Page. On the first, charge the defendant was fined £75, and on the remaining three charges the minimum, £2, in each case.
