YOUTHFUL GARDENERS.

WORK AT KOWHAI SCHOOL,

ACTIVITY IN SPARE HOURS.

A splendid example of what may bfli accomplished by work in spare hours isi provided by the well laid out play-i grounds and gardens at the Kowhal! Junior High School. Ever sinco thei establishment of the school the pupils! have been encouraged to take an active interest in gardening, with the result} that to-day the grounds are among thei best cared for in Auckland. .All tho work is voluntary and is performed to large extent after school hours, the chit' dren working individually and in or" ganised parties under the supervision oj teachers. At the present time a number of tho boys are busily engaged in levelling ;* section at tho back of the school build* ings. Although tho work was on'y recently started, an old stone wall has already been demolished and an unsightly hollow partially filled. When ths undertaking is completed the section will bo laid out .in grass and trees. Perhaps tho most interesting portioit of the grounds is the native plantation,, which is devoted entirely to the cnltiva* tion of New Zealand trees and shrubs:* All tho various flower beds are we.il planted and in a few weeks should make a bright display. The youthful gardeners derive great educational benefit, as well as pleasure, from their hobby. Boys who show outstanding aptitude for oul> door work receive special horticultural | training likely 10 be of use to thero in later life.
