TRANSPORT FROM SUBURBS.
RAILWAY POLICY CRITICISED. FEELING AT PAPATOETOE. Transport facilities between the southern suburbs and the city were discussed at length at a meeting of the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr. S. J. E. Closey, who presided, said that considerable dissatisfaction with the policy of the Railway Department existed in the district, particularly in regard to the recent increase of fares on Sundays, and the disinclination of the department to declare definitely in what manner it proposed to "nurse" suburban traffic. It was agreed to invite the commercial agent and the divisional superintendent to meet the Chamber of Commerce and the Papatoctoo Welfare League to discuss the following points:—A speeding up of services to the city; increased comfort for passengers; improved access to the streets, particularly at Newmarket station, where suburban workers' leave trains in considerable numbers; an investigation of alleged non-paying lines; review of fares and tho age limit for children. The chamber is to write tho Auckland Transport Board inquiring what plans, if any, the board has in view for tho extension of its services toward tho south of Auckland.
