EXCHANGE OF STUDENTS

GERMANY AND NEW ZEALAND. BERLIN UNIVERSITY PROPOSAL. FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. A system of exchange of university students between Germany and New Zealand is suggested in a letter which has hoen received by the registrar of the New Zealand University from Dr. K. Mehnert, of the Berlin University. The matter came before the council of the Auckland University College yesterday and it was decided to defer it for consideration until the next meeting. Dr. Mehnert stated that under the acadomic exchange service Germany carried on a student exchange with several countries. Ifc was desired to extend the service to New Zealand. It was considered that much too little was known in Continental universities about New Zealand and particularly the next generation was anxious to learn more about the Dominion in order to understand better her people and ideas. The letter continued that Germany would be pleased to invite a graduate student from the New Zealand University for the next academic year if a German 6tudent were accopted in exchange for the same term. It was arranged that such foreign guests should have room, board and free tuition at any German university or technical institution. Students were expected to pay their own travelling expenses. The president, Sir George Fowlds, said he was in -favour of the project, but he could not see how it could bo carried into effect at present. The Auckland College had not the facilities for providing reciprocal terms to a German studont. It was stated that the cost to the council would amount to £2OO a year. Sir George intimated that he would prefer to discuss the matter with the registrar and it was accordingly deferred until next meeting.
