INDULGENCE IN LIQUOR.

■ DANCES AND WEDDINGS. DISCUSSION BY PRESBYTERY. [Bl* TELEGRAM. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. A decision to "urge the Christchurch City Council and all county and borough councils in the presbytery district to grant cabaret and dance hall licences only on condition that no liquor is consumed or kept on the premises, was reached at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery to-day. The resolution Embodying tho decision was the outcome of a .report by the Rev. T. W. Armour, which stated that in.spite of the efforts of the City Council to settle the trouble drinking at dances still went on as badly as ever. ' V The discussion led to the question of alcohol at weddings. It was. a common error, said one member, that port wine could be drunk at weddings without transgressing any of the aims of temperance. Quite a number of respectable churchgoing people, he said, considered that it was an essential part of a wedding ceremony to supply liberal quantities of wine. A time had come when- alcohol must be outlawed from every walk of life. The Rev. J. A. Allen said some people even regarded with superstition the taking of wine at weddings. They thought it was necessary to ensure happiness in after life. ... " The matter of alcohol at weddings wai left undecided in the meantime, until information on the subject could be gathered from members of the presbytery.
