PAEROA-POKENO RAILWAY.

STATE VIEW OF PROPOSAL.

EXPLANATION BY MINISTER

[EY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Tuesday.

Jn a letter to the Bay of Plenty Development League, the Minister of Public Works, Hon. W. B. Taverner, states that the Government has been further investigating to ascertain whether the cost of tho pioposed Paeroa-Pokeno railway could be reduced below that which appeared to be needed after the first survey, but in spite of the efforts made it did not appear that a railway of the typo adequate for modern conditions could be made at a cost which would permit of its' earning a reasonable return. However, the aspect that the league had put forward, that the construction of this line would obviate duplication of the main line to Plankton, would need to be carefully inquired into. When the day arrived when this duplication seemed necessary, and if it could be shown that the construction of tho Paeroa-Pokeno line v.ouid obviate the need for that duplication, then the project would appear in a much more. favourable light.
