YOUNG ARTISTS' WORK.

PROMISING EXHIBITION.

USE OF BRIGHT COLOUR. Proof of the happy results that, can be attained by young artists under capable tuition is found in a display of watercolours and drawings opened yesterday in Vulcan Buildings by "The Everhopefuls," pupils of Mrs. F. Vigors.

Tlie exhibition is the second of its kind. The artists are of various ages, from 11 years upward, but all their work is fresh, original and a great credit to pupil and instructor alike. It shows a real enfhusiasm for strong colour, good general knowledge of composition and plenty of vigour. Draughtsmanship has not been neglected to attain these ends, as it is very apt to be. Iri landscape sketches, flower and still-life studies and interiors good drawing is equally noticeable. The range of work is remarkably wide, and the exhibition shows that with the right guidance, sketching and drawing may bo made one of I lie pleasantest of hobbies. The largest contributor is Bessie Lynes, who has an extraordinary variety of work, from excellently drawn and coloured studies of native plants, to a sombre charcoal and wash drawing of the interior of the Old Mill, and another of a row of old boots and shoes. She shows a couple of gay flower-pieces and an unusual study of gaudy-hued fungi. A bowl of zinnias and a mirror, by Ellice Alison, is one of the brightest of the watercolours. Mary Wilson contributes some pleasant landscape sketches, including studies of buildings and gardens, some interiors and a good representation of a bowl full of polyanthus. D. Vallance Young, one of the must advanced workers, has a very attractive study of gum trees against a grey sky, and Mary Gilbert has a vigorous little sketch of Mount Egmonfc.

Other exhibitors are Olive Tonkin, May Gilbert, Joyco Brownlee, Estello Neville, L. Phillips, and three younger girls, Betty Moses, Cecil Upton and Ella Cooke. A delightful exhibit is an album containing a poem, "Wonderland," by Miss Susio Henderson, with original fairy tnlo illustrations in ink and water-colour, by Mar'garet Ewen and Leslie Ilolbecho, aged 11 and 12 respectively. The exhibition will be open until Friday evening.
