A deputation from the Morrinsvillo branch of tho Fanners' Union waited on tho Piako County Council to advocate the levying by the Government of Is per gallon on petrol for t lie purposo of derating farm lands. 'l'he chairman of (lie council, Mr. W. R. Lowry, approved tho derating of farm lands, for the roads were used by motorists generally. Other speakers said it would bo unfair to ask motorists to pay for loans procured years ago for many back roads when thev u.-cd kucli road* very little. Ono momber said he was surprised to find tho Morrinsville Farmers' Union sending its leading members to advocate such a tax for derating purposes. A considerable portion of the rates was resultant upon special loans procured, with which joy-riders had little concern. Mr. Kennedy said perhaps they might support the principle as regards an increase of funds for county councils, but not to the extent of placing the whole burden on motorist*.
