SAFEGUARDING POLICY.
POSITION OF AUSTRALIA. MR. SCULLIN'S STATEMENT. CANBERRA. July 10. A cablegram to Australia on Thursday from London stated that tho British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Philip Snowden, had said a safeguarding policy was largely responsible for Australia's present position. Replying to this to-day the Prime Minister, Mr. J. 11. Scullin, said the previous policy of allowing Australia to be flooded with imports was largely responsible for tho depression. Australia's preferences to Britain had increased from £20,000,000 in 1907 to £52,000,000 last year. These preferences would be increased still further it' Britain would enter into reciprocal agreements, said Mr. Scullin. He intended to place Australia's position fully before the Imperial Conference.
