A measure known as the Taupiri Drainago ynd River District Act, designed to mako better provision for the drainago of lands in the watershed of the Mangawara River, and to protect those lands from damage by flood, was passed by Iho House of Representatives last session. Five or six drainage boards, as well as tho Mangawara River Board, had control over various parts of the watershed and the Act provided for tho amalgamation of the various authorities inlo one body, to be known as tho Taupiri Drainage and River Board. Tho Act did not actually constitute the board, but provided that as soon as practicable after its passing a notice should be published indicating that it was proposed to constitute the area as a drainago and river district and calling for the lodging of objections or petitions within a month. On tho expiration of that period the Governor-General might by Urdcr-in-Council constitute the area as such a district or might appoint a commission to report whether the area should be constituted. Tho Minister of Internal Affairs, tho Hon. I'. A. do la I'errelle, has no.v advised Mr. J. A. Young, M.l\ for Hamilton, that after fully considering tho representations which have been made on tho subject, of tho Taupiri swamp amalgamation, he has decided to publish forthwith a notice setting out the proposal and calling for objections. Ho had delayed publishing tho notice required by the Act merely because tho amalgamation committee desired tho opportunity of explaining fully the proposals To the settlers. That had now been done, but the various resolutions which had been forwarded to him did not warrant withholding further tho publication of tho not ice. Later, the Minister added, he would givo consideration to the question of appointing a commission as permitted by tho Act and it would then be open to the different sections to express their views fully on the desirability or otherwise of constituting tho district.
