EXPORT VALUES FALL.

THE PRODUCTION YEAR.

TOTAL UNDER £48,000,009.

SHRINKAGE IN LAST SIX MONTHS FINAL BALANCE ADVERSE. •A reduction of £8.000,000 in the recorded value of exports duiing the last six months, without any compensating contraction of imports has resulted in an adverse balance of £1,240,000 in the Dominion's overseas trade for tho 12 months ended June 30. For the corresponding period of 1928 29 I hero was an apparent favourable balance of £9,737,000. • Hot urns for the month of Juno were issued bv the Customs Department in Wellington-yesterday. They compare with those of June last year as follows: June. 19,' !0. 1929. Decrease. Exports .. £3.711,311 AM,137,774 £39(;,403 Imports .. 3,401,084 3,425,3(55 21.281 Excess . . £337,227 £712,409 £375.182 Although the decline in exports is substantial, the comparison is made with an exceptionally heavy return, tho valuation in Juno last year having been the highest for the month since 1923. Last month's valuation was higher than those in June, 1927 and 1928. With the decline in June, exports for tho last six months show a reduction of £7,990,050, while imports are £30,100 higher. A summary of the returns for tho first half of recent years is as follows: Jan.-J uno Exports. Imports. Excess '925 . . £38,898,2(53 £25,015,285 £13.382.973 192(5 . . 29,172,331 21,71(5,580 4.75(5,251 1927 . . 30,502,311 22.200.704 8.391.(537 1928 37,715,272 20.915,700 10,799.572 192!) .. 37,771,541 22.537,443 15.234,098 1!)30 .. 23,780,09 1 22,5(57,5 13 7.2 13. MS , 'lhough the value of exports is lower than in either of the two preceding years, tho comparison with 1926, a period of similarly low values, is more favourable by reason of the lower figure for imports, the apparent favourable balance this year being £2,500,000 greater. This comparison is even more striking in the returns for 12 months, which show exports about £1.200,000 higher than in 1925-26 and 1926-27 and imports over £3,000,000 less than in the former year. Returns for the last ten production years are as follows: — Year to Juno 30. Exports. Imports.
