DARING HOTEL THEFT.
TROUSERS UNDER MATTRESS. SUM OF £34 STOLEN. AUCKLAND RESIDENT'S LOSS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. A daring theft was committed in a Hawera hotel last night when a pair of trousers were extracted from under the mattress of a sleeper and a roll of notes of a of £34 was stolen. The owner of the money, an Auckland resident, visited Hawera for the Hunt Club races and had taken the precaution of placing his money in his trousers pockets and folding the garment under his mattress. His los 3 was discovered in the early hours of the morning and the police wero immediately notified. Suspicion rests upon two other casual boarders who booked in at the hotel last night, but were missing early this morning. Their beds had been occupied.
