DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
BEACH PAVILION BURNED. MUCH DAMAGE CAUSED. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. A pavilion on Opunake Beach was gutted J)y fire last night. Severe losses were suffered by the owner, the Opunake Seaside Improvement Society, and the lessee, Mrs. E. Jenkins.
The pavilion was a large building, containing a dance hall, with living rooms and a large kitchen at the side. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Mrs. Jenkins, who was the only one at home, received a telephone call from New Plymouth about 9.15 p.m. and delivered the message received. . On returning she found the building wrapped in flames. An alarm was raised, but in the absence of a suitable water supply nothing could be done. The flames spread rapidly and very little was saved from the building, only an ice cooler, which was on the front verandah, being removed. At the beginning of last season the building was repaired and several improvements were effected and new furniture and fittings were recently procured.
