THE MAORI LANGUAGE.
Sir. —As one who was always interested in the Maori and his language, I was mora than glad when Maori was included in tha syllabus of subjects. taken in the New Zealand university colleges. Of the textbooks prescribed for 1928 and 1929 I hara read all, though I found the two volumes of Moteatea rather difficult to understand, lint they were all interesting. Now. [ cannot arguo as to whether or not jt> should be a subject for academical study, but 1 would like to propose that, since ifc is included in the syllabus, the subject ba advanced by providing a second-year course, including the same number of books, not necessarily of a higher standard, and, if possible, a third-year course also. By this means a student would be bette? equipped for the dissemination of such learning than the student who merely takes a one-year course. 1 am sure this subject will arouse wide interest, especially, among those who are sympathetic with the Maori.
