NEW LYNN AFFAIRS.

REVALUATION OF BOROUGH.

LOAN WORKS APPROVED. WATER SUPPLY EXTENSION. An intimation from tho Valuation Department that a revaluation of New Lynn to bo completed, if possible, in time for rating purposes for the year 1931-32, was to be made, was received by the Borough Council last evening. Tho council also had beforo it tho resignations of its sanitary inspector, borough inspector and building inspector. It was decided to consider in commitlco the question of appointing one man to do tho work of tho three officers. As the mover of the resolution asking the inspectors to resign, Mr. S. James made an explanation to tho officers that it was not intended as any reflection upon their capabilities, but tho financial posi tion of tho borough was such that an endeavour had to be made to curtail overhead expenses.

Authority to conduct polls of tho ratepayers on proposals to borrow money for water extensions and £3OOO for New Lynn's share of tho cost of concreting Titirangi Road was received from tho Local Government Loans Board. Tho estimated cost- of tho extended water service is £B6OO, but the Loans Board added a proviso to the authority that, if the loan is approved by tho ratepayers, the Government should consent to tho raising of £2400 only, the balance not to bo raised until the matter had been further considered by the board, 'ihe work to bo carried out under the modified scheme is as follows :-»Kclston area (£2385, less £1330 on hand authorised prior to the merger with tho borough), £1055; town district extensions, £942 ]Os; lifting and relaying 3in. mains, £100; 4in. meter connecting fresh source oi supply at borough boundary on Great North Poad, £225; total, £2322 10s. The board referred back lo the council a proposal to borrow £3500 for the purpose of paving Totara and Todd Avenues in cor-crotp. with t!io opinion that a modified scheme of paving for theso streets could bo adopted to meet present requirements. Regarding Totara Avenuo West, tho board said that this work could be deferred for tho present, and that tho paving of Totara Avenue East and Todd Avenue could lie restricted to a width of 20ft. and 30ft. respectively, instead of 40ft., as proposed. Tho council has decided to submit a modified scheme on the lines suggested. NEW MEMBER OF COUNCIL. LTTTLE INTEREST IN ELECTION. Very little interest was taken in tho by-election yesterday to fill a vacancy on the New Lynn Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr John Worthington. The result was as follows:—Mr. A. M. Laing, 245 votes; Mr. F. L. Carleton, 77. There arc over 2500 names on the roll.
