PEBBLES AS SECURITY.
LOAN FROM STOREKEEPER. SEQUEL IN POLICE COURT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. An unusual deception to defraud n woman of tfix shillings was unfolded in the Magistrate's Court to-day when James McFarlano Williamson was charged with obtaining tho money by false pretences. Detective Meiklejohn said accused was obsessed with the desire to see the screening of a certain moving picture. lie called at the shop of Mrs. Annie Pickles and left a small, but heavy parcel which, he said, contained cogwheels that he had purchased for his employer. The wheels were said to have cost, six shillings, and Williamson borrowed that sum from Mrs. Pickles for the purpose of "booking seats for his employer." He said his employer was to come in later and repay the money. As no employer arrived suspicions wore aroused. Tho parcel was opened and found to contain nine smooth stones, evidently selected from tho beach to make up an appropriate weight. Detective Meiklejohn said the representation that Williamson was employed was false. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months, also to make restitution .of the money.
