NEW PORT BUILDING.
ERECTION IN QUAY STREET. TENDERS NOW BEING CALLED. Tenders are now being called for the construction of the Auckland Harbour Board's port building in Quay Street. Part of the site is at present occupied bv the premises of the Auckland .Waterside Workers' Union. The first part of the building scheme calls for the erection of one-third of the new structure, and the work will necessitate tho demolition of the present building on the site. Tho plans approved by the Harbour Board are for a three-storeyed block in reinforced concrete. The ground floor will provide accommodation for a library, bandroom, union offices, shower baths and rooms for the Shipping and Stevedores' Association. On the first floor there will be the men's luncheon room. The Welfare League, consisting of members of the Harbour Board's' staff, will conduct its social activities on the top floor. The building will also include several offices for tenants. The plans also provide for an archway to give access to the wharves.
