TRADE OF THAMES.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
NEED OF NEW POST OFFICE.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES, Saturday.
At the annual meeting of the Thames Chamber of Commerce the report of tho president, Dr. J. B. Wiggins, referred to a deputation representative of the Borough Council and the chamber, which waited on the Postmaster-General at Thames in June last, ■vjitli reference to the erectior. of a new central post office. An assurance was given that the erection of the now building would be put in hand during the current financial year. Further representations regarding the matter would be made after the opening of Parliament this month.
The altered railvyay service had proved satisfactory, but it was now evident that, with the express service running between Auckland and Tauranga and Thames as a branch line only, close attention would be required to prevent any further cur tailment of the existing railway. In discussing the railway services to Thames, several members stated that commercial orchardists now sent the bulk of locally-grown fruit to Auckland by motorlorry, instead of by rail as previously. The motor service delivered fruit, in Auckland two hours earlier than the train service.
The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr. K. S. Donovan; vice-presi-dent, Mr. F. YV. Hetherington, council, Dr. J. B. Wiggins and Messrs. J. H. Ensor, 0. R. Cook, W, Carson.
