BOISTEROUS WEATHER.

WET DAY IN AUCKLAND. DELAYS CAUSED TO SHIPPING. WARSHIP'S RETURN POSTPONED. Very boisterous and wot weather prevailed at Auckland yesterday. There was a strong wind all day from the east-north-east, and rain fell almost continuously after mid-day. Last night the wind at times increased to tho force of a moderate gale, accompanied by very heavy rain, which showed no indications of easing at a late hour. The strong wind during the day caused a choppy sea in the harbour and buffeted the yachts and launches anchored in exposed places. The small fishing-boat Wanderer broke adrift from the anchorage in Mechanics' Bay and was drifting toward the eastern tide deflector when she was rescued by a launch despatched by the Harbour Board. H.M.S. Dunedin, which had been carrying out gunnery practice in the Hauraki Gulf since June 6, was to have returned to Auckland yesterday morning with tho large target which had been used during the gunnery exercises. However, the weather was too boisterous for tho warship to tow the target so she sheltered at Kawau Island and will come into port this morning if the conditions are favourable'.

The Northern Company's steamer Kawau sailed for Warkworth, via way ports, at five o'clock last evening, but owing to the boisterous conditions in the Hauraki Gulf, she returned to Auckland two hours later. The wet weather delayed work on the waterfront. Very little cargo work was done on vessels in port during the afternoon, and none in the evening.

The rainfall for 24 hours ended midnight, as registered by the Herald gauge, was 1.55 in. There was a remarkably sudden fall of the barometer yesterday. It registered 30.20 in. at midnight on Thursday, and commenced falling shortly afterwards. The fall continued all day, but was more rapid in the afternoon and evening. The reading last night was 29.50 in., the fall recorded being .70in. in 24 hours.
