Hill, secretary of tho Wanganui Automobile Association, was quoted as slating that nothing had been done by the Railway Department in tho matter of safety at railway crossings, inquiries made of the department show that this is not the position. Immediately after taking control of the railways, Mr. H. H. Tho conference on motor legislation some mouths ago confirmed the idea which had been suggested by the department of providing crossing keepers with a portable notice bearing the word " Stop " in reflecting letters. Unfortunately, the necessary material for' the boards was not in New Zealand, and tho department took steps to obtain supplies. These are expected to arrive shortly. Immediately the supplies .arrivo tho work of making the notices will be started, so as to have them in the hands of the crossing keepers with the least possible delay.
