Several coastal vessels owned, by Richardson and Company, of Napier, ar» shortly to be converted from steamers to motor-ships, as the change will result in a reduction in running costs. The vessels concerned are the Awahou, of 410 tons, built at Paisley, Scotland, in 1912; the Pukek i, of 736 tons, built at the Goolc 1 Shipbuilding Company's yards in 1928; the Kapiti, of 242 tons, built at Paisley in 1902; the Kapuni, of 188 tons, built at Auckland in 1919; and the Hawera, of 174 tons, "built at Auckland in 1912. •
The Awahou and the Pukeko are usually engaged on the East "Coast and the other three trade between Wellington, Wanganui and Patea, with the exception ot' the Kapiti. The changes will" be made by Lowe and Company, of Auckland, toward the end of this month. The Kapiti will lig converted at Wellington. Her new engines are being brought out from Britain and consequently it will be some time before she is altered.
