[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WHANG-ARBI. Monday.
A charge of selling butter containing more water than is permitted by the Sale of Food and Drugs Act was preferred against Horace Alfred Rowle in the Whangarei Magistrate's Court to-day. Senior-Sergeant O'Grady said a pound of butter manufactured by the Springhead Dairy Company had been tested and found to contain .25 per cent, more water than was allowed under the regulations. The company had been charged with siinU i lar offences in 1927 and 1928.
Counsel for defendant, said Piowlo had just taken over the factory and was churning a quantity of butter. Two tests were always made. The first test showed 16.05 per cent, of water, and the second, after pounding, 15.9 per cent. Tests wero made daily at the factory. Hi had been laid down by butter experts that .25 per cent of water was squeezed out bv pounding. It was a difficult matter to regulate, for it was not possible to test the whole of the churn.'» There was no wilful intention.
Tho magistrate imposed a fine of £5 and costs.
