CAR FALLS INTO RIVER*

FATAL INJURIES TO DRIVER.

ONLY OCCUPANT OF VEHICLE.

A fatal motor accident occurred at Puhoi, near Warkworth, shortly beforo six o'clock last evening, when a car left tho road and fell into tho Puhoi River. Tho driver, who has been identified from his driver's licence as Mr. Julian William Roope, of 33, Sumner Street, Stanley Bay, was killed.

Tho car, of which the driver was tho only occupant, was proceeding north, and when 25yds. south of the Public Works Department's house-boat on tho Puhoi River went over a bank. After turning a cornpleto somersault it landed on its four wheels in the shallow water, 20ft. below. Tho falling car was observed by Mr. W. Daveney, an employeo at tho house-boat, who went to the scene. The driver was removed from tho car by Mr. Daveney, but ho died ajmost immediately.

Goosman, of Waitoa, on No. 1 Road, Waitoa, yesterday, and her leg was broken. CAR SOMERSAULTS TWICE. MOTHER AND CHILD ESCAPE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MART ON, Monday. A three-seater motor-car driven by Mrs. S. McJarrow, of Tutaenui, Marton, overturned on the Tutaenui Road at tho week-end. Mrs. McJarrow was accompanied by her son, aged three years, when by some means the door swung open. In endeavouring to save tho child from falling out she lost control of tho car, which careered up a bank and turned two somersaults beforo coming to rest on its wheels. Tho child was thrown clear before tho car overturned, but Mrs. McJarrow remained in tho vehicle. Both of them, however, had a miraculous escapo from severe injury, suffering only from bruises. Tho car was extensively damaged, tho body being badly battered and tho chassis strained.
