ARIKIWAI AND WATERLINE.

[BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT;] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday.

The training work at Riccarton to-day was of ail interesting nature, in view of racing near at hand. The outside of tho cottrso proper was again available, and was mado more use of than on previous occasions owing to light rain improving its hard condition The plough, however, attracted tho majority of the trainers, and except where otherwise stated, tho following gallops wero executed on that track:—

Jaloux and Greenaway wero associated over a mile, taking 1.45 3-5. They kept together throughout. Arikiwai and Taragona comfortably covered fivo furlongs in 1.8. Tho former continues to give ovory satisfaction in his work.

Waterlino was always going better than Semper I'aratus over seven furlongs in 1.31. Prido and Swiftray registered a similar task in 1.31 2-5.

Leader and Tho Viscount wero together at tho end ov five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. Leader went well throughout.

Gigglesv.ick was clear of Rapina after traversing five furlongs in 1.5. These stablemates both appear in tho acceptances for tho San down Hack Handicap at Hororata, and tho former is tho likely representative. Starshooter and Netley oxecuted n useful milo task in 1.4-1 3-5, finishing abreast. Tho Bailiff was doing better than Courtlike at tho conclusion of six furlongs in 1.16 1-5.

Malmsey, who is to mnko her reappearance in the Ilororata Cup, recorder! 1.32 for seven furlongs, Tripaway taking 1.33 for the eamo journey. >

Aberfeldy, with Gala Day as a mate over the last six furlongs, galloped a mile on the course proper in 1.4 G. He will bo ridden in the Ilororata Cup by I. Tilaon. Cay Crest had an advantage of two lengths over Hoylake at the end of seven furlongs on tho coureo proper in tho good timo of 1.31. A rider has not yet been engaged for Gay Crest at the Easter meet-

Gay Sonnet was under restraint in run ning six furlongs in 1.17 3-5.

MISHAPS AT ELLERSLIE.

c. McNeill injured

FREYJA CUTS FORELEG. Several fnlls occurred in tho courso of Iho schooling work at Ellerslio yesterday, when G. McNeill had his right collarbono broken and Freyja cut a foreleg so severely that shn will have to ho rested. McNeill was schooling Salnmander, who was one of threo horses to go round the steeplechase course, and ho had a very rough ride, for Salamander fell twico on tho way round. His first mistako was mado at tho first fence on tho hill, and then, when remounted, ho reached tho last fence, the stonewall, where ho again fell heavily and gave McNeill a nnsty tumble. Freyja was schooling over flic steeplechaso fences on tho flat in company with Odin, and, after jumping tho fences boldly tho first time, sho camo a cropper at the first fence of tho doublo when going over tho fences a second time. When Freyja landed over tho fence fiho over-renched and cut her near foreleg very severely. Tho injury will keep her idle for some time and sho will therefore havo to miss her autumn engagements. It is a coincidenco that Froyja's injury is almost similar tn tho one sustained by her full-brother, Odin, some timo ago, although it is not quite as severe.

LIGHT-WEIGHT JOCKEYS

SHORTAGE IN CHRISTCHURCH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] CfIRISTCHURCH, Thursday. On account of so many meetings being held olsewhere, there is likely to bo a scarcity of suitable light-weight riders for tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, and some of tho horses engaged in the two big events are still without prospective pilots. Although Royal Saxon remains in the Great Easter Handicap, his trip will depend on a horseman being obtained, otherwise ho will race at tho Riverton meeting.
