TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.

MOUNT EDEN TO FOLLOW.

START IN FIVE OR SIX MONTHS. TENDERS FOR EXCAVATION. Tho tramway extensions in progress at Point Chevalier and Romuera are proceeding expeditiously, according to a report presented to tho Auckland Transport Board yesterday by the* managor, Mr. 4* E. Ford. Trams will bo running to Point Chevalier Hall by about tho middle of next month, and the Romuera extension will bo completed in five or six months. An endeavour to have the Mount Eden extension schome put in hand before that of Remuora was abandoned by Mr, 0. Ashley at yesterday's meeting. Ho had given notice to movo that tho order of works should bo reversed on tho ground that the Mount Eden extension was the moro urgent, but on receiving an intimation by tho management that the change would be impracticable, as Burvoys of the Mount Eden rout© could not bo completed for some time, ho agreed to withdraw tliQ motion. "I withdraw my motion on the understanding that tho work at Mount Eden will be speeded up," ho said. Road Concreting Problem.

"We are calling for tenders for tho excavations at Mount Eden, and I anticipate that wo will be ablo to start work there as soon as tho Remuera extension is comploted," Mr. Ford said. A difficulty in connection with Mount Eden was the problom of concreting tlio road on both sidos of the train-tracks beyond Landscape Road. Some time ago the Mount Roskill Road Board discussed tho matter, but so far nothing had been done.

Mr. L. E. Rhodes asked whether it would rot bo possible to proceed with the Sandringham (formerly Edendalo) extension simultaneously with tho Romuera and Mount Eden works. Now tracks would have to bo laid over only a short distance, and the work could not take very long. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said that the present works were being economically carried out with a single plant and there would bo difficulties in the way of taking on too much at a time. Mr. Rhode.s' request, however, would be given consideration by the management. Dominion Road Contract. The completion of the Dominion Road tramway extension before schedule time gave risQ to expressions of satisfaction. Members said that tho speedy accomplishment of the work reflected great credit on tho board's staff and also on Messrs. Brierly and McLeod, the contractors who carried out tho excavations.

In a report on tho progress of the extensions, the manager said that excavations at Point Chevalier had been completed as far as the hall corner, and rails and sleepers had been laid as far as Huia Road, a distance of 125 chains. At Remuera excavation had been completed for 11 chains and rails and sleepers laid for a length of five chains. It was hoped to place the first of tho 25 now tramcars on tho road by the end of tho present month.
