WAIPA RACING CLUB. TE AWAMUTU MEETING. The Waipa Racing Club's animal race meeting is fixed to be held at To Awamutu on Saturday, December 14. The programme issued comprises eight events, with prisemoney to the amount of £llsO. The To Awamutu Cup has a money prize of £3OO and in addition a trophy valued at 40 guineas will bo presented to tho owner of tho winner. From the programme, which will be found published in full in another column, it will be seen that nominations for all events closo on Friday next, November 29, at 5 p.m., and the same may bo lodged either with tho secretary, Mr. J. G. Wynyard, To Awamutu, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Co., High Street, Auckland. STUD NOTES. A STALLION BARGAIN. BY PHAETON. At tho dispersal sale of tho Kinloch Stud in the summer of 1928 tho imported siro Paladin (by Polymelus—Cestus) was included in the lots submitted, but for eomo reason tho English-bred liorso failed to command spirited competition and ho fell to a bid of 130 guineas, at which sum he was bought by Mr. A. G. Hill, of Dunedin. Chide, winner of tho New Zealand Cup, Cantorbury Cup and G. G. Stead Gold Cup, is by Paladin, and --tho Polymelus hcrse has at least ono real good representative to help to place him well on the sires' list this season. NIGHT RAID'S RECORD. It is thus early mado fairly clear that tho New Zealand-owned siro Night Raid will head tho winning sires' list in Australia this eoason, for he is placed in quite a commanding position by the exploits of his brilliant sons Nighlmarch and Phnr Lap, who between them have caplured prize-money to tho amount of £31,563 in the first threo months of tho season. In tho event of Nighlmarch and Phar Lap continuing to train on propoily and the pair being in a position to reproduce their beet form when the autumn meetings come round, Night Raid's record can bo depended upon to receive a further big additionWARSTEP'S PRODUCE. Warstcp, one of New Zealand s groat rneo mares, has foaled a filly to Weathervane. It was a coincidence that the news should arrive on the day of tiro New Zealand Cup, a race in which V'Au-step ran a dead-hoal with Indigo in 1911. "Wttrslep was trained for that and all her other engagements by G. Muriay-Aynsley, the owner-trainer of Chide, the latest New Zealand Cup winner. Mr. Dalgety has not had a great deal of luck lately with his own team, but (says "Argus") ho has had reason to bo interested in the doings of two horses who have performed well this season. Ho bred Marsa, the dam of tho Melbourno Cup winnor Nightmareh. also Reproachful, tho dam of tho New Zealand Cup winner Chide. This is a record of which any studmaster might bo proud. MISCEIiTjANEOtfS NOTES. The imported sire Quanlock died in New South Wales recently. Laughing Prince, who has performed well in New Zealand, could be cited a* the best hors» sired by Quantock.

" Inquirer."—The following is the list of horses (hat have won the Auckland Cup carrying over 9.o:—NelHon (twice) 9.8 and 9.12, Wuiriki 9.8, and All Red 9.1. THE KING'S HORSES. A DISAPPOINTING SEASON. BY PHAETON. Another season's racing is drawing to a close in England without a notable success being credited to a horse carrying the colours of His Majesty—indeed, it has been a very lean year for horseß from the Rojal stable. That there is no royal road to success in racing is accepted as a welltested truism, and the indifferent success that has attended horses carrying His Majesty's colours certainly emphasises the point. Many horses of unexceptional breeding have been raised at the Royal stud since King George V. ascended the Throne, but very rarely have any proved above the moderate standard, and, when it is recognised that expense is not considered in an effort to breed the best, the unsatisfactory iesult provides material for a deal of thought. • The only colt nominated by Hia Majesty for the Derby of 1930 is Captain Kidd (by Captain Cuttle—Golden Isle). GOOD SPECULATIONS. A NEW ZEALAND TRIO. A trio of horses bought in New Zealand after they had been raced that brought a golden return to thei'r respective purchasers are The Hawk, Laughing Prince and Nightmarch. Approximately the following are the sums won by the horses in question since they changed hands: Bought Stakes At. Won. Gns. £ The Hawk, 4yrs . . 500 .. 18,061 Laughing Prince, 2yrs 1,000 . . 7,673 Nightmarch, 2yrs .. 1,000 .. 17,462 THE HAWK AT ELEVEN YEARS. WINS THIRTIETH RACE. The Hawk, who is now in his eleventh year, made a reappearance under Bilk at the Otaki meeting on Wednesday. In the decision of, the Wai'tnwa Handicap he finished unplaced, but the Rekereko Handicap saw the veteran worry down the two favourites. First Money and Veronese, and win. by c, neck in lm 13 2-os, which is to bo accepted as evidence that the old son of Martian is still equal to running a smart six furlongs. The Hawk has now contested 108 races and hia winnings in stakes run out to over £23,000. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. VISITOR FROM VICTORIA. Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, of Victoria, is at present making one of his frequent visits to the fishing rivers in tho vicinity of Temuka, in the South Island. The New Zealand Referee remarks:—"Mr. Clarke does not come across every year, but it is seldom that he misses a visit to tho Dominion, and a considerable portion of the £130,000 credited to him by horses trained by James Scobie has been won while their owner lias been 'whipping the streams in South Canterbury." Mr. Clarke has bred many noteworthy racehorses, including the champion Gloaming and TrivnlveFRIZES OF THE SALE-RING. Tho death of Mr. Leslie Mncdonuld serves to revivo recollections of the purchases he made at tho dispersal 3ale of the St. Albans horses in the spring of 1900, when he secured Revenue for 725 guineas and Wakeful for 310 guineas. Wakeful made an early return by -winning the Newmarket Handicap in the succeeding autumn, while Revenue led tho field home in the Melbourne Cup of 1901. During her career Wakeful won prize-money to the amount of £16,690, and, as she subsequently produced a Melbourne Cup winner in Nightwatch, who won the Flemington race under Mr. Mncdonald's colours in 1918,• that added further lustre to her name and demonstrated what a great prize came to Mr. Macdonald when he secured the bay mare for the moderate sum of 325 guineas.

NIG HTM ARCH'S COP ENGAGEMENT. Wellington telegrams have slated that Nightmarch has been withdrawn from tho Auckland Cup, but tho son of Night Raid still remains in tho big race set down far decision at Ellerslio on Boxing Day, and it is quite probable that Mr. Louisson is awaiting the declaration of tho weights before deciding on tho course to bo pursued in mapping out tho summer programme for liia horse. TE ATIAWA. The four-year-old gelding Te Atiawa was brought from New Plymouth this week in order to undergo an operation for wind trouble at tho hands of Dr. W. C. Ring. Te Atiawa. who was recently leased to Mr. R. Lewis, is a well-bred gelding by Chief Ruler from Wako-up. niNTS BY GREAT TRAINER, In his book, "My Life 011 the Australian Turf," just published, J. Scohie. tho veteran Flemington trainer, says;—"ln preparing a horse for tho Melbourne Cup you must put condition on him first, to mako him (or her) hard and tough. It is no use galloping a horso that is not well. I just study out tho ease of each horso nnd work on my own ideas. The observant trainer can tell instantly if anything has gone wrong with a horse. If tho work is liarmful, ho can tell; if it has brought benefit, he can tell. Thero is 110 fixed theory on which a trainer can work. The main aim should bo to get as near to Nature as possible, and to uso common-senna. I believe in open air and plenty of green feed." POOR BLOODSTOCK SALE. Bloodstock appears to be a bit of a drug 011 tho market at present in Victoria. Early in the week following the cup carnival at Flemington a sale was held in Melbourne, and out of a. large number of horses submitted only five lots reached a sum amounting to four figures, and the eight-year-old stallion Avernus (by Jolly Begsar—Acclivity) was knocked down for 27 guineas.
