FOUR SAFES ATTACKED.
CRACKSMEN'S PERSISTENCE.
POOR REWARD FOR EFFORTS.
Persistent safebroakcrs who forced an entrance into a Sydney factory one night recently were only prevented from robbing their third safe for that night by some noise outside the building.
One of the windows at the rear of the premises was ineffectively fastened, and the thieves had little trouble in gaining an entrance. They made their way to the offico, whore they found three safes. They must havo spent an unhappy five minutes wondering which one contained the most money, and then apparently they decided to try the lot. They attacked the first, one with a iernmy, It yielded after the door was badly broken, and the thieves triumphantly removed a few shillings. The next safo they treated the same, way, and when the door fell off they found themselves with a total haul of £3. With renewed vigour the intruders attacked the third safe. The jemmy proved ineffective, and they filled the keyhole with- a charge of explosive. Then came the noise that disturbed them. They fled. and probably spent the, nfght in regretful thoughts of the huge sums that third safe might haye contained. It is considered likely that the same gang was responsible for an attack on a safe atu foundry later in tiio morning. They forced an entrance through the back floor, removed tho office safo and •attempted to blow it open. The attempt failed, and before they could make a second effort tho night-watchman disturbed them.
