SAVED BY A DOG.

/ACCIDENT ON A FARM.

MESSAGE IN A MATCHBOX.

At. Oownngardie, near Violet Town, (Victoria, a son of Mr. W. B. Tonks was at work recently in a paddock some distance from his home with a spiked roller. The roller went, over a stump and caused tho driver to fall from his seat in front oP the machine. He retained hold of the reins and called to the horses to stop, uhirh thev did, but not before a spike of the roller had cone through tho heel of his hoot, fortunately missing the flesh,; but twisting his leg severely. • In this position, suffering severo pain and not knowing when the horses might move and crush liirn, the youth lay for tome time. His dog was with him, and after a timo he managed to find a piece of paper, a pencil, a piece of string and f. matchbox. He wrote on the paper, 'Come at once," enclosed it in the matchand tied it to tho dog's neck. After some difficulty the young man managed to get the dog to understand that he wanted it to go to the house, and eventually it set off at full speed 10). home. Help was soon forthcoming, and the youth was extricated from his /perilous position. He was on the verge of collapse. His leg was severely. swollen, and it will he some time before he regains full use of it. He considers that lie- } owes his life to his dog.
