A SUCCESSFUL GLIDER.
Sir, —It is claimed that the glider shown in Saturday's Herald is the first made in Auckland. Toward the end of 1913 a biplane glider was constructed at the Auckland Technical College by a son of Dr. Briffault, with the assistance of several third and fourth-year engineering students. The machine had cane skids and was carried by the operator by shoulder straps with his arms resting on side pieces. He was then able to control the joystick, and with the three helpers he ran down an incline and was launched into the air, flying about 150 yards. We tried it on the hill in the Outer Domain where the huts were, and facing the children's ward. It was then exhibited in the Technical College exhibit of tho Auckland Exhibition, but I do not know what became of it afterwards. This will correct any error as to the first successful glider made to fly in Auckland. L.A.M.
