CIVIC LEAGUE.

A meetinc o! the Civic League was held last evening and was presided over bv Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, president. As a talk was to be given by Mr. A. J. Brown, A.R.1.8.A.. u P on tovrr P lann,n s in regard to residential development, a considerable part of the evening's business ■was held over to be dealt with at the next meeting.

Mr. Brown, spoke of the great developments that had taken place in town planning during the past few years and then proceeded to outline certain phases which sooner or later, and more patticularlv sooner, Auckland would have to face. The question of the muhiplestoreyed flat and the part it war, likely to plav in the future development of this citv was interestingly dealt with by the speaker. That a great lateral expansion carried beyond a certain point was un economic was a point explained at some length. Mr. Brown stating that it meant a trreat development of roads and c>f transport services at a cost was scarcely commensurate with its ultimate value to the citv. The daily travelling of considerable distances, as many people had to do to get to their work made an undue strain upon them, whether the} v.ere conscious of It or no. Another point made by the speaker was that where land was used too lavishly values were apt to become inordinately high. Other leading features in residential planning were touched upon and the speaker •was thanked lor a very interesting lecture.
