LEAP FROM A BRIDGE.
YOUNG MAN AND WOMAN. POLICE EFFECT RESCUE. [IIY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] BLENHEIM, Thursday A young man and a young woman leaped from the Alfred Street Bridge into tho Omaka River last evening, after an altercation. The two were first observed quarrelling 100 yards from the bridge. Tho young woman attempted to escape the ' man's attentions, but ho overtook her, and the argument was continued on the 1 bridge, which is on one of the main I business thoroughfares. Suddenly the woman climbed the handrail of the bridge and leaped into the water. The man followed her example. The police arrive# a moment later and rescued tho pair. Tho woman was taken to hospital and tho man was arrested. This morning in the Police Court William Dalziell Keith, aged 28, pleaded I not guilty to a charge of assaulting Edna Kitto, and also to a charge of offensive behaviour. The police asked that he bo remanded in custody until , to-morrow morning, as the young woman j was still in hospital.
