INEFFICIENT BRAKES.

MOTORIST BEFORE COURT. NEED OF SUPERVISION URGED. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCII. Friday. A statement to the effect that there should ho some supervision of the condition of motor-cars, and especially of the brakes, was made in the Magistrate's

Court to-day by Mr E. C. Lcvvey, S.M., when John Hancock was charged with having faulty brakes on his motor-car. Tho police examined the car after it had been in a fatal collision. Mr. W. J. Stacey appeared for Hancock, who pleaded guilty. The regulations under which the proceedings were taken state that each brake of a car must bo capable of easy adjustment. and shall bo maintained at all times in good working order In outlining tho case, Senior-Sergeant Shannahan said there had been a collision which resulted in a man's death.

Detective Langeson and Constable Smith said they tested the brakes on Hancocks car. Hancock admitted that the handbrake was useless. Tho condition of the car was shocking. Tho front left wheel had no bearings in it, and tho steeringwheel had a quarter of the circumference backlash. Thcro was no lining on the right hand near hub brake, and no brake at all on tho left hand near wheel. The front wheel was held on with a washer, nut and a nail. Constable Williamson said ho reported immediately after the accident that ho had tested the'car. He was of tho opinion that the gears were faulty and tho headlights inefficient. Mr. Stacey said tho police had adjusted tho carburetter when they tried the car. It was a question whether that made any difference. Defendant was endeavouring to sell tho car and did not intend to drive again. "It is a case which calls for comment as to the necessity for some supervision of tho condition of cars, and especially of the brakes." said the magistrate. "I suppose the only way it can be forced on the attention'of the public is by a prosocution. Considering the circumstances, do fendant will bo fined 10s and costs."
