THE RAILWAYS.
Sir, —The Railway Department may not be able to prevent delays to Main Trunk trains, but it is surely possible to produce enough steam to heat the carriages in this weather. "Service" appears to bo an unknown thing on the railways. All the department cares about is getting the people into the trains and seeing that each has paid his fare. Guards doubtless have enough to do, but I sometimes wonder why sleeping car attendants are carried. These employees should be responsible for the heating of the whole train. The lack of "service," which embraces everything from water for washing or sanitation, which is often short, to heating, must astonish travellers from overseas. I presume, however, that when an authority of the department or a personage of the Government is on board some slight effort is made to reduce discomfort. Zero.
