GRACEFUL OR UGLY.
Sir, —As a bridge supporter who read with great interest your condensed reports of two papers delivered recently before a combined meeting of architects and engineers, 1 wonder if tho sentiment that "graceful or ugly, the bridge must be built" finds general endorsement? Incidents relating to Hobson Bay have shown that the people of Auckland will no longer stand by without protest while the harbour is despoiled 01 its beauty. Will our attitude be otherw so toward the creation of unloveliness in mid-harbour ? Wc should demand that when tho bridge comes into being it shall bo the result of proper collaboration between architect and engineer. Layman.
