GIFT TO AUCKLAND.
MATERNITY HOSPITAL SITE.
MINISTER'S APPRECIATION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Thursday. An offer of a free gift of a valuable section afc Ellerslie to be used for maternity hospital .purposes was made recently by Mrs. Marian Caughey Smith, of Auckland, after discussing with the Minister of Health, Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, and the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Mr. W. Wallace, the valuable work being done by the maternity hospitals of the Dominion. The Minister sent a very appreciative letter of thanks to Mrs., Caughey Smith on behalf of the Government and has now arranged for title to be taken by the Auckland Hospital - Board, in which is vested the Alexandra Convalescent Home property, which was the gift of Mrs. Caughey Smith and her late husband, Mr. W. H. Smith. The combined sections make a very beautiful property. The Minister keenly appreciates the handsome gift of Mrs. Caughey Smith, not only for its intrinsic value, but also on account of the recognition by the donor of the need for and the value of the work of the maternity hospitals. There are two-thirds of an a,ere in the site, which is in a high and sunny position, and comparatively close to the Ellerslie railway station. It adjoins the Alexandra Convalescent Home.
