EMPIRE DAY.
TO-DAY'S OBSERVANCES.
WREATH ON VICTORIA STATUE.
/ . To-day is Empire Day, and the 110 th anniversary of the birthday of Queen Victoria. Except in Canada, where Empire Day, under the name of Victoria Day, is kept as a national holiday, the birthday of Queen Victoria is now observed very quietly in the Mother Country and in the Dominions. In New Zealand the recent practice ha;s been to observe Empire Day conjointly with the King's Birthday on June 3.
The Victoria League, however, will honour tho late Queen's memory to-day, and the president, Misst Mowbray, will place a wreath at the basse of the Queen's statue in Albert Park at noon. A wreath will also be laid at the Maori war memorial at the intersection of Syinonds and Wakefield Streets on behalf of the league. The anual Empire ball of the league was held in Scots Hall last evening. In conformity with the practice in London the Auckland fellows of the Royal Empire Society, formerly known as the Eoyal Colonial Institute, will hold a luncheon in the University College at one o'clock to-day," and the annual meeting will follow.
