NEW BRIDGE OPENED.
CEREMONY IN NELSON,,
PRIME MINISTER'S ADDRESS,
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION NELSON, Thursday.
There were scenes of great enthusiasm when the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, opened the new Motueka-Iliwaka Bridge this afternoon. Mr. J. Corder, chairman of the Waimea County Council, presided. The Mayor of Motueka, Mr. S. P. Clay, Hon. H. Atmore, and Mr, G. C. Black, M.P., also spoke. Sir Joseph Ward congratulated the district on the completion of one of the largest bridges of its type in New Zealand. The structure is 1075 ft. in length. It was an indispensable link, he said, between Nelson and all the country to the north-west. Further, it opened the way to what could be great tourist resorts, and which could be made of great national importance to New Zealand with further development. Not even the meat and dairy industries would bring into New Zealand as much money as the tourists would leave behind them. Hearty cheers were accorded Sir Joseph at the conclusion of the function.
