ARAPUNI POWER SCHEME.
DEPARTMENT'S CAPABILITY.
CONFIDENCE OF MINISTER.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The view that if the Arapuni hydroelectric scheme had been undertaken in its entirety by the Public Works Department, instead of some of the work being let out on contract to a private concern, it would have been completed as soon as, if not sooner than, the Waikaremoana scheme, is held by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. E. A. Ransom. Addressing the annual conference of power board secretaries to-day, thu Minister said there had been criticism of the Arapuni scheme and it had been said that the department's scheme could not be carried out. When the undertaking had been taken over by the department, however, it had proved that it coulc't be done. Ho was satisfied that, had the Public Works Department carried out the Arapuni scheme from the outset, it. could have had it completed as soon as Waikaremoana. In fact, ho was of opinion that Arapuni would have been the first to supply power.
