HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES.
PAYMENT EACH QUARTER.
MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANCE
[BY TELEGBAPH. —PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Thurnday. The Minister of Transport, Hon. W. A. Veitch, announced to-day that an Order-in-Council had been passed amending £he heavy lorry regulations to provide for the payment of the heavy traffic fees quarterly instead of annually. Representation;! in regard to the matter had been made by organisations representing carriers, service car and taxi-cab owners, and others., as to the hardship suffered by having to find large sums of money at one time. The Government had given the representations careful and sympathetic consideration, said the Minister, and no doubt; the opportunity of paying fees quarterly would be of considerable relief to owners of motor vehicles.
As already announced, the general question of taxation was at present engaging the attention of the Government, but in view of the very far-reaching investigations necessary it would be some little time before any final decision could be arrived at.
