BIRKENHEAD CONTEST.
ELECTION OF NEW MAYOR.
Hoavy polling characterised the election at" Birkenhead. The total number of persons on the roll is 2463, and the voters nurnbercl 1450. Particular interest centred in the mayoral contest, which was won by Mr. J. P. McPhail against Messrs A. Hadfield and K. C. Walton. The former mayor is Mr. K. G. Skeates, who is now living in England. In the election for the borough council there were 18 candidates, and the voting w;t fairly close. Four members of the ol'i council were returned.
