OTHER LOCAL BODIES.

HARBOUR BOARD MEMBERS.

MANY HOSPITAL CANDIDATES.

CITY AND COUNTRY VOTING. In addition to the election of Mayors and councillors in the city and suburbs, other important local bodies have to be elected to-day. City electors will be concerned with choosing five'members for the Auckland Hospital Board and four members for the Auckland Harbour Board, while suburban and country electors, grouped as combined districts, will also have a voice in electing representatives to the same bodies. In the case of the Hospital Board, polling will take place in some districts on May 8. The unusually large number of outer seats so contested is in striking contrast to the experience of two years ago, when the retiring members were in almost all cases unopposed.

Districts on the northern shores of the Waitemata Harbour will also bo called on to-day to elect representatives on the Waitemata Power Board, although in the caso of the Waitemata County the election will nob be held until May 8. THE HOSPITAL BOARD. FIFTEEN CITY CANDIDATES. POSITION IN OUTER AREAS. The city has five representatives 011 the Auckland Hospital Board and 15 candidate aro offering themselves, including the five retiring members. Lundon, Mrs. I. McOready. W. J.. McMillan. *M. J. Savage H. D. Schmidt. ' H. P. Taylor, W. A. Thompson. *W. Wallace. Mr. W. K. Howitt (representing the four North Shore boroughs) and Mr. A. S. M. Idling (representing the Pvodney, Waitemata and Great Barrier Island Counties, Helensville and Warkworth) have been.re-elected unopposed. A contest will take place to-day to elect two representatives of the combined district of Mount Albert, Mount Eden, Newmarket, Onehunga, New Lynn and Ellerslie. The two sitting members, Messrs. E. H. Potter and J. Rowe, are again standing, and Mr. L. W. Holt is also a candidate.

Two further contests will take place on May 8. One representative is required for the combined district of Manukau County; Otahuhu borough, and Papakura, Manurewa, Papatoetoe and Howick town districts. .The sitting member, Mr. S. J. Harbutt, is not seeking re-election, but the nominations of Mr, C. R. Petrie and the Rev. W. C. Wood .have been received.

The other election ou May 8 will be to elect a representative for the combined district of the Franklin County, Pukekohe borough, and the Waiuku and Tuakau town districts. Mr. J. D. Chalmers, the sitting member, is opposed by Mr. 0. A. H. Tapper. A representative has also to be appointed for the road districts in the Eden County. Mr. M. J. Covle, the representative for many years/ recently announced his retirement, after which it was found lie had sat on the board for a year longer than legally entitled to do so. The position, now is that the One Tree Hill and Mount Roskill Bond Boards have decided to nominate Mr. »S. J. Harbutt for the position, and providing, the Mount Wellington lload Board, the other body interested; is in agreement with that proposal, Air. Harbutt will be elected to the board at the nomination of thosa bodies, who have power to fill such an extraordinary vacancy. THE TRANSPORT BOARD. POSITION OF THE MEMBERS. BEARING OF TO-DAY'S POLLS. Although there will not be a Transport Board election until 1931, to-day's elections will have an important bearing on the constitution of the board for the next two years.

The present members of the board are the nominees of the local bodies having jurisdiction in the transport district, and the Iraiisport Act as first drafted provided that they should hold office for four years, when half of them would retire. This was unacceptable to some of the constituent bodies and to the Auckland members of Parliament and, as a result of several conferences when Ihe hill was being considered by the House of Representatives, a compromise was reached. This provided that the first members should be nominated and should hold office until 1931. However, provision was made that the local bodies to bo elected to-day should have the right to reconsider the personnel of Int. board and to replace sitting members by others.

Several of the candidates for ofTico as mayors and councillors in tho city and suburbs have given pledges that if tuey are elected they will seek authority to recall any sitting member of the Transport Board who is not returned as a member of his constituent local body. The personnel of the board is as fellows:—Messrs. J. A. C. Allum, chairman, G. Baildon, A. J. Entriean, E. J. Phelan, M. J. Coyle, G. Ashley, E. H. Potter, F. S. Morton, J. Wood ar.d L. E. Rhodes.
