MAYORALTY AND COUNCIL*.

The retiring Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. L E, Rhodes, who is standing for a further term, is opposed by Mr. R. E. N. Matthews.

; Mount Albert elects its Borough Council on the ward system. There will be no contests in Wards B and D. For the

former Messrs. B. Brigham and R. E. Carr have'been returned unopposed, and for Ward D Messrs. H. L. Kayes and J. Taylor have had the same experience. In Ward A Messrs. P. Floyd and W. G. Russell, the retiring members, are opposed by Messrs. J. Carrie and W. 1). Fulton: In Ward C Messrs. A. A. BuckIcy and J. H. Langlcy, the retiring members, are opposed by Messrs. F. Evitt, H. A. Miles and F. Pickering. Ratepayers of the borough should note that the three loan proposals for the development of reserves will not be placed before them until May 8, the date of the Transport Board's poll. As part of a combined district, Mount Albert electors will also be called on today to select two representatives on the Auckland Hospital Board. NINETEEN FOR 12 SEATS. As was the case two years ago, Mr. E. H. Potter has been re-elected unopposed to the Mayoralty of Mount Eden. Nineteen nominations, including those of ten members of the old council, have been received for the 12 seats on the Borough Council. Those nominated are:— Messrs. A. M. Bryden, J. P. Hooton, L. Joll, W. G. Lange, <l. M. Melville, R. McK. Morison, S. Ncwcomb, J. Smith, G. L. Taylor, W vWoolley (sitting members), S. E. Chappell, A. P. Hartnell. R. Hoppy, W. W. King, I!. ,J. Stills, W. 11. Naglc, F. L. Rendell, E. Stevenson, and A. G. Upton. As part of a combined district, Mount Eden will also have a voice in selecting two representatives from three candidates for the Auckland Hospital Board. VOTING AT BIRKENHEAD. FOUR ISSUES FOR ELECTORS. Three candidates are offering themselves for the Mayoralty of Birkenhead, an office filled during , the expiring term by Mr. E. G. Skeates, who recently left New Zealand to reside in England. The candidates are Mr. A. Iladfield, deputymayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail and Mr. E. C. Walton.

There are 18 nominations for the nine seats on the Borough Council. The candidates are:—Messrs. G. B. Hewson, A. G. Jasper, L. R. L. Moller, W. B. Darlow (sitting members), J. C. Alexander, J. A. Bishop, H. A. Campbell, J. W. Canty, P. Dennen, V. J. Fitzpatrick, R. R. Hayman, J. Kerruish, J. Macdonald, F. Morris, A. 0. Paterson, J. Prickett, It. B. Speirs and G. Wood. On the present occasion Birkenhead will also be entitled to one representative on the Waitemata Power Board and four candidates offer their services. These are Messrs. W. B. Darlow, J. P. McPhail, L. R. L. Moller and E. C. Walton. Birkenhead electors will also have a voice in the election of a North Shore representative on the Auckland Harbour Board. The candidates are Mr. J. Hislop and Mr. A. E. Greenslade.

i For the second successive occasion the burgesses of Devonport have elected Mr. E. Aldridge unopposed to the Mayoralty. There will be no dearth of issues, however, for 15 candidates have been nominated for the nine council vacancies, and six for the three Devonport seats on the Waitemata Power Board. In addition, Devonport electors, as part of a combined district, will have a vote in the Harbour Board poll, and Devonport ratepayers will also vote on two loan proposals advanced by the Borough Council. The council candidates are:—Messrs. C. M. Browne, W. S. Campbell, F. J. H. Ellisdon, J. Hislop, S. 11. Lyon, I. Massev, T. Walsh (sitting members), H. Barnliill, W. Cassells-Brown, F. T. Eyre, G. Falla, T. M. Jay, E. 11. Little, W. Perry-Taylor and F. A. Thompson. Devonport's representation on the Waitemata Power Board is three members. The candidates are:—Messrs. S. E. Kennincs, G. Trevithick (sitting members), E. 11. Little, 0. W. Marks, W. PcrryTavlor and T. Walsh.

Mr. J. Hislop and ISIr. A. E. Grecnslade are contesting the North Shore scat on the Auckland Harbour Board.

Tho loan polls are on proposals to borrow £4300 for land compensation and £I9OO for tho Yauxhall sea-wall.

The polling places are:—Borough Council Chambers; Power Boara demonstration room, Marino Square; Masonic Hall, 145, Victoria Road; Cook's Store, 87, Vauxhall Road; Mission Hall, Calliope Road, Stanley Bay; King's Store, 73, Lake Road; and Chamber of Commerce reading room, 17, Swanson Street, City.
