TO-DAY'S ELECTIONS.

CITY AND SUBUKBS.

MAYORALTY OF AUCKLAND.

FOUR candidates in field

WIDE CHOICE FOR COUNCIL.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR POLL.

Elections of Mayors and councillors of cities and boroughs, as well as of members: of many local governing boards, will take/;, place throughout New Zealand today. / This is the first year in which tho elections have been conducted on May Day, the chango from the last Wednesday in April to the first Wednesday in May having been authorised by Parliament in order to avoid conflict with Anzac Day.

With four candidates in the field for the Mayoralty of tho city, and 67 for the 21 seats on tho City Council, as well as active competition for the vacancies on, the Harbour Board Hospital Board, the task confronting the electors of the city to-day. is a large one. Complete arrangements for the smooth conduct of the poll have been made by tihe returning' officer, Mr. P. F. Notley. It will assist us greatly if the electors will vote early in the day and use the heavy black crayons provided for marking the ballot papers," Mr. Notley said yesterday. "We are ready for big crowds at the larger booths, but, at the same time, it will also assist ii r . the people make nse of the smaller booths, thus distributing the work, and facilitating the counting 7 of the votes in the evening." Voting Requirements.' Voting is effected by leaving untouched the names of the persons Whom the elector wishes to- support, and by striking out the names of those for 'whom he does not /wish to vote. In the council and board elections, it is not necessary to vote for the full number of candidates required to fill all the seats. The papers will be valid as long as votes are not cas'fc for more than the full number. A couucil paper will be valid if only ilialf-a-dozen names are left untouched. Votes by declaration are accepted only when the voter's name has been omitted from the roll through the fault of the electoral office. i Completing the Results.

The booths will bo opened at nine o'clock, and -will be closed at seven o'clock this evening. Mr. Notley expects to be able to announce the result of the mayoral election shortly after eight o'clock, and then the results of the Harbour and Hospital Board contests. The counting of the votes jn the council election 'will take much longer. In 1927, when there were 61 candidates, the provisional count was announced shortly after 7 midnight, and, with the arrangements he has made this year, Mr. Notley expects to be able to complete at about the same time. A feature .of the suburban elections this.year is that most of the representatives on the Hospital Board have opposition. In 1927 they were returned unopposed. Devonport ratepayers will be called upon to vote on a borough loan proposal. For the convenience of electors, some of the suburban authorities have, arranged for polling-places in the city.
