FLOODS NEAR GISBORNE.
ROAD TRAFFIC HAMPERED.
HARBOUR WORKS DAMAGED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE, Sunday. The very heavy rains at the end of last week resulted in the principal streams to the north of Gisborne being flooded and road traffic on the coast was seriously hampered. A breach occurred in the double row of piles on the training wall at the harbour works owing to a break in tho Waimata River. Steps were taken to secure shipping and the barge gate in the training wall was closed to prevent the silt-laden water from flowing into the basin.
Owing to the heavy rainfall at Te Araroa the river between that township and Hicks Bay could be forded only on horseback, there being no other means of direct communication between the two places. The flooded state of the Mangahauini Stream, between Tokomaru Bay and Te Puia Springs, resulted in the complete dislocation of communication by road with the northern coastal districts. Practically every township on the coast was isolated as far as transport by road was concerned.
