POLICE COURT NEWS.

THEFTS OF FOOTWEAR. TWO MEN SENT TO PRISON. Charges of stealing footwear valued at £2 from shops in Newmarket and Parncll, were preferred against Joseph Roy O'Shea, aged 33, and Thomas Banning Marchbank, aged 39, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday. Marchbank was also charged with resisting arrest.

It was stated by the police that one pair of boots was removed from outside a shop in Parnell. Tho men were watched and finally accosted in Newmarket, where Marchbank struggled violently in the street and bad to be handcuffed. In tho struggle another pair of boots chopped to the ground from under Marchbahk's coat and it was later found these also had been stolen. Both men were stated to bo well known, one having 23 previous convictions and tho other 19.

O'Shea: T have not been in trouble for a long time. "Well, you am in trouble now," said tho magistrate in sentencing each man to six months' imprisonment.

"If is a pity we cannot, get this man out of the country," remarked the magistrate, in referring to an Indian. Givan Ganesh, who appeared on a charge of stealing 10s and a pair of trousers from a countryman. Accused was remanded on Friday in order that he might call evidence in defence, but tho magistrate decided to enter a conviction. "lie is a menace and a nuisance to his countrymen," said Chief-Detective Hammond. "He knocks them about and robs everyone of them. As soon as ho gets out of gaol he starts to rob again." Mr. Hammond added that accused had recently completed a term of two years' imprisonment.

A penalty of six months' imprisonment was imposed.
