MOTOR RACING.

SPORTS AT THE SPEEDWAY.

SOME SPECTACULAR DRIVING. NEW LAP RECORD ESTABLISHED. About 2000 pc•;11o attended the motor races held by the Muriwai Racing Club oil; tlio Mangero Speedway on Saturday. Although higher speeds were attained, competition was hardly as keen as at the inaugural meeting last month, and tho long waits on several occasions proved tedious. Tho large field of motor-cyclists in tho first raco caused confusion and tho declared result was challenged. This event was accordingly run again. Tho task of watching about 16 cars in tho 10-lap raco baffled most of tho spectators, and many did not agree with tho oflici.nl finding. A protest was entered on behalf of the Whippet, for which first place was claimed, all hough tho car secured no placing in tho official view. Tho objection will bo under consideration to-day.

Tho most spectacular driving was that of K. B. Wilson, but his Stutz was never ablo to overcome its handicaps. In one raco tho Stutz established a new lap record of lm 10 3-ss, a timo which meant an average speed of nearly 64 miles an hour. Tho last raco was run at 5.30 p.m., in failing light, and ono car was actually raced with headlights. An interlude was provided by a "stunting" display by Captain M. C. McGregor, pilot of the Hamilton Airways Moth. The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club staged a 32 miles race. About 25 machines started, tho placings being:—H. Russell, 50s, 1; N. Casey, Bss, 2; L. B. Roberts, 30s, 3.

Following aro the results of the motor racing:—

Tho handicap gave tho Triumph a start of nearly a inilo before Bell's Chrysler not off scratch. The starting of tho Stutz, Bell's Chrysler, and tho Smith Special bo far behind tho limit cars caused confusion from tlio start, and before tho rare was hall over few of the spectators, and not. all of the officials, could sny who was leading and who was n lap in arrears. To many it appeared the Whippet was_ fourth at; tho end of the first lap, fourth in tho second lap. and first in tho field thereafter until tho end of the race. The official decision was however that the Whippet was passod by both the Smith Special and Bell's Chrysler and that it never overtook the Triumph There were some bright flushes among tho chaos. Tho Stutz started with a hopelessly large handicap to overcome. It was also struggling wilh ignition trouble, but during tho race it gave a dashing display. T<ast until tho beginning of the seventh lap. the Stutz got into its strido and overtook four cars. During the following Inns it attained speeds previously unattained by cars on this track. One lap was covered in lm 10 3-ss. Bell's Chrysler was a worthy rival, and it made ono lap ill lm lis. Smith drove through tho field in spectacular fashion, and certainly passed many slower cars.
