CARRIER FROM COUNTRY,

FINE OF £SO IMPOSED. CANCELLATION OF LICENCE. A fine of £SO, in default three months' imprisonment, for being intoxicated while in 'charge of a motor truck, was imposed upon a Waiuku carrier, Alfred Jackson, aged 43 (Mr. Holmden), by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in tho Polico Court on Saturday. Tho magistrate also ordered the cancellation of accused's driver's licence for a year. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said accused backed his truck out of Victoria Street and collided with a tramcar at the Hobson Street intersection. The motorman alighted, and on going to tho truck found accused at tho wheel. A woman, who was sitting beside him, was also under tho influence of liquor. She had already been fined for drunkenness that morning.

Mr. Holmden said it was admitted accused had had several drinks on his trip to tho city from Waiuku. However, ho had not been in trouble before and ho had suffered about £SO loss in damage to his vehicle. In imposing the penalty tho magistrate said he would allow accused 14 day 3 to find tho money. "That will give him time to sell his lorry,"- he remarked.
