CHILDREN'S PLAY AREAS.
CARNIVAL AT MOUNT ALBERT. A carnival and Paddy's market, organised by tho Aroha Ladies' League of Mount Albert to collect funds to equip children's play areas in tho district, was opened yesterday by the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy. Iho Mayor of Mount Albeit, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, introduced Mr. Stallworthy, who said that the establishment of playing areas would tend to improve the health and general welfaro of tho children. The Hon. J. B. Donald also spoke, and Messrs. H. R. Jenkins, H. G. R. Mason and G. C. Munns, M.P.'s, were also present.
Tlio Aroha, Ladies' League was organised some 18 months ago by Mrs. E. M. Srnylhe, of Mount Albert, and has already raised £l4O, which has been utilised in partially equipping Melvcrn Park as a play area. The proceeds of Iho carnival will bo devoted to completing the equipment at Melvcrn Park, and to fitting Gribblehurst and Domain Parks as areas for children's recreation.
About 1000 pupils of the Kowhai Junior High School gave a comprehensive display of physical drill arnd massed dancing, and there were numerous other attractions. Various stalls and side-shows were open, and donkey-rides attracted a largo number of children. The carnival will he continued to-day and this evening, when various competitions will bo held Music will be provided by tlio Artillery Band.
