LABOUR IN AUSTRALIA.
MINEOWNERS' DIFFICULTIES
MEN MAY BE DISMISSED.;
(Received February 6. *7.13 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 6. The chairman of the Northern Collieries Company stated to-day that some mines must bo closed soon because the little trade they had was going. Tito question of giving the miners a fortnight's notice had been considered, but it had not yet been decided.
A telegram from Adelaide says the Premier of South Australia, Sir. R, L. Butler, states that the prices submitted by the New South Wales Colliery owners were not acceptable, owing to the insufficient reduction in price. The Government did not desire to secure supplies outsido Australia, but it would obtain stocks as required for a short time, in the hope that the collieries would be able to arrange a reduction in price, and also that the New South Wales Government might assist by lowering the rail freight, royalties and harbour dues.
